Carbon Black Manufacturing Process Technology and Process Plant

Carbon black is produced with the thermal decomposition method or the partial combustion method using hydrocarbons such as oil or natural gas as raw material.
The characteristics of carbon black vary depending on manufacturing process, and therefore carbon black is classified by manufacturing process. Carbon black produced with the furnace process, which is the most commonly used method now, is called “furnace black,” distinguishing it from carbon black, which is manufactured with other processes.

Furnace Black Process

This method forms carbon black by blowing petroleum oil or coal oil as raw material (feedstock oil) into high-temperature gases to combust them partially. This method is suitable for mass production due to its high yield, and allows wide control over its properties such as particle size or structure. This is currently the most common method used for manufacturing carbon black for various applications from rubber reinforcement to coloring.

Channel Process

This method forms carbon black by bringing partially combusted fuel, which is generated with natural gas as raw material, into contact with channel steel (H-shaped steel) and then collecting the carbon black which results.
There are yield and environment issues around this method, and therefore has lost the leading role as the mass production process to the furnace process. This method, however, provides carbon black with many functional groups on the surface, being used in some painting applications.
Acetylene

Black Process

This process obtains carbon black by thermally decomposing acetylene gas. It provides carbon black with higher structures and higher crystallinity, and is mainly used for electric conductive agents.

Lampblack Process

This method obtains carbon black by collecting soot from fumes generated by burning oils or pine wood.
This method has been used since the days before Christ, and is not suitable for mass production. However, it is used as raw material for ink sticks as it provides carbon black with specific color.

The materials will be driven to the edge of dial by centrifugal force and fall down into the ring, crushed and grinded by roller, and become powder after production of three rings. The high pressure centrifugal blower will inhale air from outside and blow the crushed materials to classifier. The rotating turbo in the powder concentrator will make the coarse materials return to the mill and reground, while the fineness will mix with the air and go into the cyclone and be discharged in the discharge bin, which is at the bottom of it. The air, which mixed with very little fineness, will be purified by impulse duster and discharged by blower and muffler. -

Calcium Carbonate Caco3 Grinding Mill for Paper Making Industry

When you use paper products, do you think about lime?  Well you should, because lime has a vital role in both the quality of the paper products and the preservation of our land and water resources.

In technical terms, lime products are used in the pulp and paper industry in the recausticizing cycle to recycle sodium hydroxide for use in the pulp digester.  Lime products can be used to scrub flue gas in on-site boilers and to treat industrial sludge and industrial waste water generated in the production process at pulp and paper mills.

So the next time you write on a piece of paper, or wrap something in paper, or read a newspaper, think lime!Lime products are also used to make precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC), a chemically-formed calcium carbonate particle which is used as filler in paper.  PCC improves the optical properties of paper and decreases the amount of pulp needed to make paper, subsequently reducing the number of trees needed.  PCC is also used in other filler applications such as for plastics.

There are four popular minerals used in paper filling and coating: kaolin clay, calcium carbonate (available as ground or precipitated), titanium dioxide and talc. Both titanium dioxide and talc, however, are consumed in small quantities for special applications where extreme whiteness and opacity, or pitch control are required. Hence, the workhorse minerals employed in the paper industry today are precipitated and ground calcium carbonates and kaolin clay.

Calcium carbonate is used in paper mill as a filler material in the alkaline papermaking process. Now a days Calcium carbonate dominant over other papermaking filler materials; though at the first stage of papermaking kaolin was 1st choice. The main reason behind the preference of calcium carbonate is the demand for brighter and bulkier paper.

There are significant benefits to the use of calcium carbonate in the al¬kaline papermaking process. But Calcium Carbonate filler is unsuitable in acid papermaking and wood-containing paper.

Usually Calcium carbonate occurs in three natural forms such as limestone, chalk and marble. Naturally it is forms between the reactions of calcium salt and carbon dioxide. This process is still going on in the Oceans.
There are two types of calcium carbonate used in paper mill – ground calcium carbonate (GCC) and precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC).

Ground calcium carbonate (GCC)
Ground calcium carbonate is manufactured by grinding limestone or marble because of their high brightness and purity. Generally the particle shape of ground calcium carbonate is rhombohedral. This filler material is used in alkaline wood free papermaking process. The brightness of GCC is 86-95%.

Advantages of Ground calcium carbonate (GCC)
GCC is cheaper and it has high brightness.
GCC creates a porous surface on the paper sheet due to its rhombohedral particle shape.
GCC is hydrophobic as a result it is liberate water more rapidly.

Lower binder demand

Disadvantages of Ground calcium carbonate (GCC)
The rough particle shape of GCC creates a problem; it is more abrasive and shortens the life of paper machine clothes.

Precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC)
Precipitated calcium carbonate is the form of CaCO3 which is manufactured by chemical reactions and the process is known as carbonation process. PCC improve the drawback of GCC, it is provide better gloss and opacity properties for the paper. Because of the structure of PCC is different from the structure of GCC. The crystal structure of PCC are needle-shaped, rhombohedral(cubic), scalenohedral (triangular) and prismatic. The brightness of PCC is 90-97%.

Wollastonite is a naturally occurring mineral with many unique characteristics. Through advanced processing, it has become one of the most versatile functional fillers in the marketplace. Wollastonite increases the performance of many products including plastics, paints and coatings, construction materials, friction, ceramic and metallurgical applications to name a few.

Wollastonite is an industrial mineral comprised chemically of calcium, silicon and oxygen. Its molecular formula is CaSiO3 and its theoretical composition consists of 48.28% CaO and 51.72% SiO2. Natural wollastonite may contain trace or minor amounts of various metal ions such as aluminum, iron, magnesium, potassium and sodium. Wollastonite is rarely found by itself and generally contains other minerals like calcite, garnet and diopside that are removed during processing.

Optimum performance is created by properly matching the correct coupling agent at the right concentration level to the polymer system. Overall, the benefits of a surface modified wollastonite are improved physical properties, improved processing along with improved dispersion of the resin.

Plastics: In plastics, wollastonite improves the durability of the composite due to its acicular or needle-like structure. It also enhances electrical insulating properties, adds fire resistance, and improves dimensional stability. Finer particle size grades provide improved scratch and impact resistance compared to other materials. The application of surface treatments like silanes on the wollastonite substrate changes the mineral from a utilitarian filler to a functional component of a polymer composite. This in turn adds performance values which the base resin alone does not possess. Construction: Wollastonite has found application as a substitute for asbestos in fire-resistant building products used in the construction industry. As a functional additive, wollastonite improves flexural and impact strengths. Its low thermal conductivity and high aspect ratio structure also makes wollastonite an attractive addition for applications requiring fire resistance. Wollastonite finds application in interior and exterior construction boards, roof tiles, shaped insulation products, sheets, panels and sidings.

Paints and Coatings: In coatings, fine acicular particles act as a good flattening agent and allow paint to settle out after application to produce a dry film of uniform thickness, and the interlocking particles improve toughness and durability of the coating with excellent tint retention, scrub, and weather resistance. High brightness and whiteness reduce pigment load and typically very low oil absorption, reduces the volume of binder required and contributes to reduced pigment costs. As noted earlier, wollastonite can also act as a pH buffer for improved in-can paint stability over long periods of time. The acicular structure and alkaline nature of wollastonite also make it an ideal auxiliary pigment in industrial coatings and primers for improved corrosion resistance.

Ceramics: Wollastonite can be used in a variety of ceramic applications including ceramic glazes and bodies, enamels, frits, fluxes and in sanitary-ware. This industrial mineral is a source of CaO to alkaline glaze formulations to improve the strength of the glaze. Wollastonite also has a low LOI (< 1%) which gives minimal gas evolution during firing resulting in a smooth surface with diminished pinholing. Due to its acicular structure, wollastonite improves green strength and reduces crazing and checking especially during rapid heating and cooling. It has a low sintering temperature (approximately 991-1196°C) which is comparable to that of most natural frits.

Metallurgical: In metallurgical applications, wollastonite is used due to its low water solubility, low loss on ignition and its Ca–Si ratio. Wollastonite is commonly added to formulated powders for steel casting and welding. A CaO/SiO2 ratio of 1 readily absorbs Al2O3 that is detrimental to finished steels. The addition of wollastonite to metallurgical fluxes provides ready fusibility, good insulating qualities and low viscosity. Because wollastonite is a natural, low temperature flux, it has found acceptance in fluxing formulations used in the continuous casting of steel. When molten steel is poured continuously from a ladle or tundish, a casting powder is applied to maintain surface defects, prevents oxidation of the steel, lubricates the mold wall and absorbs harmful inclusions.

Friction: Due to its physical structure and non-hazardous properties, wollastonite is used as a reinforcing additive in many friction applications. It is also a partial/full replacement for asbestos, milled fibres, chopped glass and synthetic materials. Its primary application is in semi-metallic and nonasbestos formulations for truck blocks, drum linings, disc pads and friction paper. Benefits of using wollastonite in a friction formulation include improved physical and mechanical properties, reduction or elimination of cracking, improved pre-form strength, improved friction stability, noise reduction and reduced raw material and unit cost (density).
